Aluminum construction & finish durability
We machine every slat from extruded aluminum, then apply a matte black powder coat that bonds at the molecular level. This finish stands up to gravel roads, car washes, and years of sun exposure without flaking or chalking. The slats interlock with a weatherproof seal, so rain and dust stay out even during highway speeds.
Aluminum keeps the entire assembly light enough for one-person installation, yet rigid enough to support snow load without sagging. Unlike vinyl or fabric covers, our aluminum slats won’t stretch, tear, or require tension adjustments over time. The sealed ball-bearing system rides inside protected channels, so dirt and debris never jam the mechanism.
Installation & truck compatibility
The Retrax Pro mounts with a no-drill clamp system that grips your bed rails without permanent modification. Most installations take under an hour with basic hand tools. We include vehicle-specific rail adapters for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan full-size trucks.
The canister sits 11 inches behind the cab, leaving your bed floor completely flat when the cover retracts. You keep full access to stake pockets and bed-mounted toolboxes. If you run a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch, the cover retracts far enough forward to clear the kingpin area on long-bed models.
Daily operation & locking security
A single aluminum handle lets you pull the cover open or closed from either side of the bed. The sealed bearing cartridges glide with minimal effort, even in freezing temperatures or after months of storage. You can stop the cover at any point and twist the lock to secure your gear—no need to close it completely every time.
We pair the Retrax Pro with a rotary latch at the tailgate, so the cover locks to your truck’s factory tailgate lock. When fully closed, the slats nest tight against the seal, and the integrated key cylinder prevents unauthorized access. For added security during overnight stops, close the cover and lock the tailgate—both systems work together to protect high-value cargo.

Yes, the cover retracts completely into the canister, clearing the kingpin area on long-bed trucks. On short-bed models, you'll need to open the cover fully to access the hitch, but the retraction takes only seconds. The canister sits 11 inches behind the cab, so it won't interfere with a gooseneck ball or fifth-wheel rails when the cover is stowed.
The Retrax Pro uses a rotary latch that ties into your truck's factory tailgate lock. When you lock the tailgate with your key, the cover automatically locks in place. You can also lock the cover in any partially open position by twisting the latch handle. This dual-lock system secures both the tailgate and the cover with a single key.
Our matte black powder coat is UV-stabilized and impact-resistant, designed to withstand years of sun exposure and daily use without fading or chipping. The finish bonds to the aluminum at high temperature, creating a layer that's significantly more durable than paint. Most owners see no visible wear even after five years of outdoor storage and frequent operation.
Minimal maintenance keeps the system running smoothly. We recommend rinsing the slats and rails every few months to remove dirt buildup, and applying a drop of silicone lubricant to the latch pivot once a year. The sealed ball bearings are pre-lubricated and maintenance-free. If you drive in heavy dust or mud, a quick rinse after each trip prevents grit from accumulating in the rail channels.
The standard Retrax Pro does not include integrated T-channels for rack mounting. If you need to carry kayaks, bikes, or ladder racks over the bed, consider our Pro MX model, which features T-slot rails on top of the slats for accessory attachment. The Pro MX uses the same aluminum construction and bearing system, with added versatility for cargo management.
The aluminum slats can support up to 500 pounds of evenly distributed static load when the cover is fully closed. This means you can walk on the cover for bed access or stack lighter gear on top, but we don't recommend using it as a permanent storage platform. For heavy rooftop cargo, a traditional rack system mounted to the cab and bed rails is a safer choice.
