Retrax Pro XR Retractable Tonneau Cover
The Pro XR represents our flagship aluminum retractable tonneau cover, built for truck owners who demand rugged protection without sacrificing bed access. We engineered this cover around a matte black aluminum slat design that retracts into a low-profile canister mounted at the front of your bed, giving you the flexibility to open partially or fully in seconds.
Every Pro XR ships with our patented spiral track system, stainless steel ball-bearing rollers, and a built-in key lock for security when you're away from the truck. The cover sits flush with or slightly below the bed rails for a clean appearance and full stake pocket access. Whether you're hauling gear to a job site or loading weekend adventure equipment, the Pro XR opens with one hand and locks at any position along the bed.
Pro XR Construction & Operation

Aluminum Slat Construction & Finish
We built the Pro XR slat assembly from extruded aluminum rather than vinyl or polycarbonate because aluminum delivers superior impact resistance and holds its shape across temperature swings. Each slat receives a matte black powder coat finish that resists chipping, fading, and corrosion from road salt or UV exposure.
The slat design includes an integrated weather seal along each edge, creating overlapping channels that shed water away from the bed. You’ll notice the cover remains rigid even when fully extended, thanks to the aluminum’s natural stiffness and the continuous support provided by our spiral track system. This same construction philosophy extends across our entire lineup, including models in the retractable covers series engineered for different truck bed configurations.

Spiral Track System & Bearing Operation
Patented Track Design
The Pro XR relies on our patented spiral track to guide the cover smoothly from the canister to the tailgate. Unlike straight-rail systems that depend on tensioned cables, the spiral track maintains constant contact with the slat edges, distributing load evenly and preventing binding or twisting during operation.
Sealed Ball Bearings
We install sealed stainless steel ball bearings at every contact point where the cover rides within the tracks. These bearings are permanently lubricated and shielded against dust intrusion, so you won’t need to apply grease or perform routine bearing maintenance. The result is effortless one-handed opening and closing even after years of daily use in harsh weather.
Low-Profile Canister & Bed Access
The canister housing sits 13 inches from the front of the bed and stands just under 11 inches tall, preserving the majority of your forward bed space for cargo. When the cover is fully retracted, you retain approximately 85 percent of your bed’s total volume, allowing you to haul tall items like toolboxes or dirt bikes without removing the cover.
Because the canister mounts behind the cab, you maintain full rear-window visibility and can pair the Pro XR with most fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitches. The cover does not interfere with bed-mounted tie-downs, and all factory stake pockets remain accessible for securing loads or installing rack systems.

Common Questions About the Pro XR
The Pro XR locks at any position along the bed rails, so you can open it just a few inches to grab tools or slide it back fully to expose the entire bed. The lock mechanism engages wherever you stop the cover, giving you complete flexibility for different loading situations.
This partial-open feature is especially useful when you need quick access to gear stored near the tailgate without fully retracting the cover and exposing everything in the bed.
The Pro XR's aluminum slat construction can support moderate snow accumulation without damage, but we recommend clearing heavy snow buildup rather than letting it sit for extended periods. The cover is not designed to bear the weight of thick ice or deep snow.
If you live in an area with frequent heavy snowfall, brush off the cover after each storm to prevent excess weight from stressing the slat assembly or track system. The powder coat finish protects against corrosion from road salt and ice melt.
The Pro XR is compatible with most spray-in bed liners and installs using clamps that attach to the top of your bed rails. The rail clamps adjust to accommodate the added thickness from spray-in liners without requiring modification.
You should verify clearance at the front bulkhead where the canister mounts, as some thick bed liners may interfere with the canister's fit against the cab. Most installations proceed without issues, but it's worth measuring before ordering if you have an unusually thick liner.
The Pro XR is compatible with our T-slot rack system, which mounts directly to the cover's side rails and allows you to carry bikes, kayaks, or cargo boxes. You cannot install a traditional cab-height toolbox because the canister occupies the space directly behind the cab.
If you need both a tonneau cover and a toolbox, consider a low-profile crossover toolbox that sits closer to the bed rails, leaving clearance for the canister. Many truck owners use the secure bed space under the cover as storage instead of adding a separate toolbox.
The canister measures 13 inches deep and sits at the front of the bed, which means you lose approximately 15 percent of your total bed length when the cover is fully retracted. For an 8-foot bed, you retain nearly 7 feet of usable space; for a 5.5-foot bed, you keep about 4.5 feet.
This trade-off gives you the flexibility to haul tall cargo like dirt bikes or appliances without removing the cover entirely. The canister also stays below the top of the bed rails, so it doesn't block your rear window or interfere with cab visibility.
The Pro XR requires minimal maintenance thanks to its sealed ball-bearing system and powder-coated aluminum construction. We recommend rinsing the cover and rails with water every few months to remove dirt and debris, and checking the rail clamps annually to ensure they remain tight.
You should not need to lubricate the bearings or tracks, as the sealed bearings come pre-lubricated for the life of the cover. If you notice the cover becoming harder to operate, inspect the tracks for debris buildup and wipe them clean with a damp cloth.
The Pro XR is water-resistant rather than waterproof. The overlapping slat design and rubber seals along the rails keep out most rain and road spray during normal driving, but heavy downpours or pressure washing can allow some water to enter the bed.
If you need to protect sensitive electronics or water-vulnerable cargo, we recommend placing items in waterproof storage bins or dry bags inside the bed. The cover provides excellent protection for tools, sporting equipment, and general cargo that can tolerate occasional moisture exposure.
