Retrax Pro MX Retractable Truck Bed Cover

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

We designed the Retrax Pro MX for truck owners who demand both form and function. The matte black polycarbonate slats deliver the same strength as our polished models while giving your bed a factory-installed appearance that blends seamlessly with modern truck finishes.

Our patented low-profile design sits flush with your bed rails when closed, maximizing cargo space and maintaining full stake pocket access. The sealed ball-bearing rollers glide on spiral spring-loaded tracks, allowing one-hand operation from any position along the rail. Whether you're securing tools on a job site or weekend camping gear, the Pro MX locks at any point along the bed without requiring you to fully close or open the cover.

Matte finish aluminum construction

We build the Pro MX rail system from extruded aluminum that we powder-coat in a matte black finish. This coating process creates a surface that matches the textured bed liner and trim finishes found on today’s trucks, unlike polished aluminum that can look out of place against modern factory aesthetics.

The polycarbonate slats themselves are manufactured from the same polymer blend we use across the entire line, then finished with a matte topcoat that resists scratches from cargo loading. The same sealed bearing design that defines our Pro series platform keeps debris and moisture out of the track channels, which means the cover continues to retract smoothly even after seasons of dust, rain, and road salt exposure. Each slat interlocks with the next to create a continuous surface that distributes weight evenly across the bed.

Low-profile rail clearance
Sizing & fit

Low-profile rail clearance

Our engineers designed the Pro MX canister to sit just 3/8 inch above your bed rails when fully retracted. This height allows the cover to nestle below most tonneau cover mounting points while still providing clearance for the internal spring mechanism that powers the retraction.

The low stance means you retain full use of your truck’s existing tie-down points and stake pockets without modification. We’ve tested the cover on beds with spray-in liners, drop-in liners, and bare metal surfaces—the rail clamps adjust to accommodate liner thickness without requiring spacers or shims. When you need to haul tall cargo, the entire cover retracts into the canister in under ten seconds, giving you instant access to the full bed depth without removing any components.

Installation and bed compatibility

Every Pro MX kit includes bed-specific rails that we pre-drill for your exact truck make, model, and bed length. The clamp-on mounting system uses stainless steel fasteners that grip the bed rail from underneath, eliminating the need to drill into your truck bed or compromise the factory warranty.

We provide installation templates for precise canister placement at the bulkhead. Most customers complete the install in under an hour using basic hand tools—no special equipment or professional installation required. The kit includes all necessary hardware, a tube of marine-grade sealant for the drain holes, and step-by-step instructions with bed-specific torque specifications.

Perfect match for my Silverado's bed liner
I was worried about the matte finish looking cheap, but it blends perfectly with my spray-in liner. The cover operates so smoothly that I can open it with one hand while holding cargo. Installation took me about 45 minutes and I didn't have to drill a single hole in my bed.

Handles Minnesota winters without issues
We've had this cover on our F-150 for two winters now. It still retracts smoothly even when the truck sits outside in subzero temps. I've had six inches of snow sitting on it and it doesn't bow or creak.

Low-profile design was exactly what I needed
I haul a gooseneck horse trailer and needed a cover that wouldn't interfere with my hitch. The Pro MX sits low enough that my hitch clears it by at least two inches. The ability to lock it partially open means I can secure my tack box up front while leaving the back open for hay bales.

Great security for my tools
I keep my power tools locked in the bed during jobs. The lock feels solid and the cover doesn't flex when you push on it. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that I wish it came with a third key in the box.

Installed it myself with no prior experience
I'm not particularly handy, but the instructions were clear enough that I got it done in about an hour. The clamps grip tight without requiring excessive torque. The cover has been on for six months and I haven't had to adjust or tighten anything.

Matte finish still looks new after a year
I was concerned about the matte coating showing scratches from loading lumber and steel, but it still looks as good as the day I installed it. Water beads right off and I've never had any pooling or leaking into the bed.

Good to know

Common questions about the Retrax Pro MX

No drilling is required. We designed the Pro MX with a clamp-on mounting system that secures to your existing bed rails using stainless steel clamps and fasteners. The only drilling you’ll do is creating small drain holes at the front bed corners for moisture drainage, which we provide templates for in the installation kit.

The clamps adjust to accommodate different bed rail widths and liner thicknesses without modification. This installation method preserves your truck’s factory warranty and allows you to remove the cover completely if you ever need to without leaving permanent holes in your bed.

The Pro MX uses sealed ball-bearing rollers and a powder-coated aluminum rail system that continues to operate smoothly in temperatures from -40°F to 140°F. We’ve tested the cover in both freeze-thaw cycles and desert heat without any degradation in performance.

The polycarbonate slats are UV-stabilized to prevent cracking or fading even after years of sun exposure. The matte finish actually sheds ice and snow more effectively than polished surfaces because it doesn’t create the same smooth surface for ice to bond to. We’ve had customers in Alaska and northern Canada report reliable operation through multiple winters without any binding or sticking issues.

Yes, you retain full access to all stake pockets when the Pro MX is closed. The rail system sits on top of your bed rails without blocking the stake pocket openings below. This means you can still install cargo bars, bike racks, or any other stake pocket accessories without removing the cover.

The low-profile design also maintains clearance for bed rail-mounted accessories like ladder racks and toolboxes, though we recommend checking specific clearance requirements for your accessories before installation.

The primary difference is the slat finish. The Pro MX features matte black polycarbonate slats, while the standard Pro uses polished aluminum slats with a high-gloss finish. Both models share the same low-profile dual rail system, sealed bearing mechanism, and locking security features.

The matte finish on the Pro MX better matches modern truck aesthetics, particularly if you have a textured bed liner or matte trim pieces. The polycarbonate material is also slightly lighter than aluminum while maintaining the same strength and load capacity. Functionally, both covers perform identically in terms of weather sealing, retraction speed, and security.

The Pro MX is rated for 500 pounds of evenly distributed static load. This rating covers scenarios like accumulated snow in winter or placing light equipment on top of the closed cover during transport. The polycarbonate slats distribute weight across the entire bed surface rather than creating point loads.

We don’t recommend using the cover as a walking surface or placing concentrated loads in a single spot, as this can stress individual slats beyond their design limits. For dynamic loads or regular use as a cargo platform, we recommend our aluminum slat models which have higher point-load ratings.

The Pro MX is compatible with most fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitch systems when the cover is fully retracted into the canister. The canister sits at the front bulkhead and typically clears hitch mounting rails by 2-3 inches depending on your specific truck model and hitch design.

For trucks with above-bed hitch systems, you’ll need to ensure your specific hitch model has adequate clearance over the 3/8-inch rail height. We recommend measuring your hitch’s lowest point and comparing it to our rail specifications for your bed length before ordering. Some customers choose to operate the cover in a partially retracted position when towing, which is fully supported by our lock-anywhere design.

The matte polycarbonate surface cleans easily with soap and water using a soft cloth or sponge. We recommend avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or pressure washers directly on the slats, as these can damage the matte coating over time.

For best results, rinse the cover with clean water first to remove loose dirt, then wash with a pH-neutral car wash soap. The matte finish doesn’t require waxing or polishing—in fact, applying wax can create glossy spots that look uneven. We recommend cleaning the cover every 2-3 months or after exposure to road salt, tree sap, or industrial fallout.
